ABOUT «PROCEEDINGS OF THE TAURIDA SOCIETY FOR HISTORY, ARCHAEOLOGY, AND ETHNOGRAPHY»

In 1919–1921 Taurida Learned Archival Commission (Russian acronym TUAK) was transformed into a historical-archaeological society which in its meeting on 25 March 1923 decided to name itself the “Taurida Society for History, Archaeology, and Ethnography” (Russian TOIAE). The Society existed till 15 January 1931. In 1927 the Society successfully revived the publication of its “Proceedings” (Izvestiya in Russian) with double numeration of volumes to continue volumes of the ITUAK (the last volume of ITUAK printed in 1920 was number 57). Four volumes of new “Proceedings” came out altogether, in 1927, 1928, 1929, and 1931 respectively. The first volume (or 58th according to ITUAK numbering) was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Chair of TUAK and TOIAE Arseniy Markevich, the 50th anniversary of his scholarly carrier, the and 40th anniversary from the day when the Taurida Learned Archival Commission was organised.

The leaders of Russian science of the period participated in jubilee volume to be published after a long gap because of their friendship with the “patriarch of Crimean studies” Markevich and extraordinary works on organisation done by Markevich and the Secretary of the Society Nikolay Ernst. Three volumes of the “Proceedings” (better known according to russian acronym ITOIAE) still kept classical traditions of historical research in local lore, though the last, fourth volume was dedicated to 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Soviet Power in the Crimea, which is why it contained mainly politically-coloured papers about the events of the Revolution and Civil War. With our Web resource, you can get acquainted with all volumes of the “Proceedings” of the Taurida Society for History, Archaeology, and Ethnography, as well as of its predecessor, the Taurida Learned Archival Commission.
